In Search of Peter Pan (New Edition), HC/sw

A writer’s strange journey through the Valais Alps in 1930, following in the footsteps of a boy who never wanted to grow up …

Vlatko Z. Zmadjevic, better known as Melvin Z. Woodworth, an English writer of Serbian descent, retreats to the small, remote village of Ardolaz—an enclave forgotten by time, where people’s lives have hardly changed for centuries—to work on his new novel—or so his publisher believes.

But Woodworth’s stay increasingly takes on the character of a pilgrimage, and the place where his brother, the composer Dragan Zmatjevic, met his end becomes, for the author, a place of encounter with his past and—in the form of the counterfeiter Baptistin and his granddaughter Evoleta—with the future as well. His search for Dragan’s legacy turns into a race against time, for the unstable glacier above the village threatens to slide down and wipe out the Ardolaz Valley—just as the modern 20th century is inexorably displacing the way of life and traditions of its inhabitants.

J. M. Barrie’s famous novella *Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens*, about the boy who didn’t want to grow up, served as inspiration for Cosey’s portrayal of the fairy-tale-like Wallis, whose world he captures in powerful, atmospheric images. With his semi-autobiographical graphic novel *IN SEARCH OF PETER PAN*, Cosey—whose real name is Bernard Cosandey—has established himself as one of Switzerland’s most important comic artists. IN SEARCH OF PETER PAN was awarded the Max and Moritz Prize for the best German-language publication in 1988 and is considered Cosey’s most mature and sophisticated work.
