By day, blind lawyer Matt Murdock strives to live up to the dream of his murdered father. By night, with superhuman senses, he watches over the dark urban canyons of Hell’s Kitchen as Daredevil. But when his childhood sweetheart Elektra, the infallible assassin Bullseye, and New York’s Kingpin begin hunting him down, his life takes a tragic and dark turn.
If you love Marvel’s heroes, you can’t ignore Daredevil. For many years, the daredevil from Hell’s Kitchen has been a staple of visionary American comic art. That wasn’t always the case. In the late 1970s, the series about the blind lawyer was in crisis. Even by the standards of the time, the stories and villains were quite bizarre. The title was on the verge of being canceled when a young, up-and-coming artist threw his hat into the ring. Up until then, Frank Miller had primarily illustrated covers or served as a fill-in artist. Now, for the first time, he was entrusted with his own series. Inker Klaus Janson had been on board, with some interruptions, since 1975. Together with writer Roger McKenzie, they explored Matt Murdock’s roots and brought investigative journalist Ben Urich and Daredevil’s greatest enemy into the spotlight: Bullseye, a cold-blooded killer who never misses his mark.
But that was just the beginning of what may have been the most exciting transformation in Marvel history. Things got really serious and dark when Miller took over the writing as well. Hell’s Kitchen, the rough neighborhood of Irish immigrants where he himself had lived, served as the grim backdrop from then on. To kick things off, Miller and Janson introduced Murdock’s childhood sweetheart Elektra, followed shortly thereafter by his mentor Stick and the ninjas of the Hand. The crime lord Wilson Fisk—actually one of Spider-Man’s archenemies—emerged as a brilliant antagonist alongside Bullseye. By the time Miller set out for new horizons, he had transformed a dilapidated old boat into a proud flagship. This collection takes you back to a bygone, more innocent era. The U.S. comic book industry was in a sort of period of self-discovery and was reluctant to grow up. But Frank Miller and Klaus Janson lit the beacon at the end of the tunnel. A new era was dawning—a radical change in direction. Two pioneers paved the way for the Man Without Fear through the darkness and into the light. And an entire industry followed suit.
