Splittermond: Beyond the Borders—The Fairy Realms of Lorakis
The world beneath the Shard Moon consists of more than just physical reality. In addition to what the inhabitants of Lorakis consider to be reality or the “here and now,” there are three other worlds—the magical, spiritual, and mythical domains—known as the “Otherworlds,” which ordinary mortals can glimpse only rarely or under special circumstances. In this volume, we focus on the Magical Realm—the totality of the fairy worlds, the original homeland of most magical creatures and the powerful fairy lords, whose power, at least in their homeland, is hardly inferior to that of deities.
Beyond the Boundaries explores the nature of the fairy realms and their inhabitants, as well as the laws that govern their coexistence and their relationship with mortals. This volume explains the conditions under which a transition from the mortal realm to the magical domain is possible, what one must keep in mind to win the fairies’ favor through pacts or to avoid their wrath through treaties, which boundaries serve as invitations for the fairies to cross and which are impenetrable barriers, how to maintain one’s bearings despite all the confusing and wondrous impressions, and what mysteries, treasures, and dangers await mortals.
The worlds that open up behind the portals are also distinct fairy realms. These moon paths obey their own unique laws. They are certainly the best-known otherworldly realms, but even though they are visited quite frequently, they still hold bizarre surprises and dangers for the body, mind, and soul of those passing through.
In addition to the “typical” fairy realms, which lie adjacent to the major cultural regions of Lorakis and shape the image of the magical domain there, there are also countless very special locations, fairy courts, and subdomains, a selection of which is presented in *Beyond the Borders* to illustrate the diversity of these otherworlds. Eternal battlefields and world machines find their place here, as do the home of the Wild Hunt and a domain of the Children.
The volume is supplemented by an extensive bestiary featuring creatures from the magical realm, many of which feel so at home in the mortal world that you can encounter them on Lorakis as well.
