The objective of Trio (on the 2024 Game of the Year shortlist) sounds simple: Players try to be the first to form three sets, each consisting of three matching number cards. However, the cards are hidden both in a face-down display in the center of the table and in the other players’ hands. Whoever reveals two matching cards in a round gets to try their luck a third time, potentially securing the winning trio.
Trio combines memory and deduction elements in a new way, featuring simple rules and short, exciting games that are highly addictive.
Statement from the “Game of the Year” jury:
“Three times three—that’s all it takes to win at Trio. There are three cards each numbered one through twelve in play—some in the players’ hands, others face down in the center of the table. The goal is to find three sets of three by skillfully questioning your fellow players. “Please show me your lowest card” or “I’d like to see your highest one” are the two permitted requests. Those willing to take risks may also choose to reveal one of the face-down cards in the center of the table. As long as the numbers found match, you may continue searching to complete the “Trio.” The player who can best remember which cards have already been revealed and where will find the fastest path to TRIOmph.”
